[edit] Overview

Totally Spies stars three teen aged superspies from Beverly Hills, California: Clover, Sam, and Alex. They secretly fight international crime with special gadgets supplied by their boss, Jerry, who is the founder and leader of the secret World Organization Of Human Protection (WOOHP) agency. They must balance their missions with their day-to-day lives, maintaining their secret identities, high school (seasons 1-4), college (season 5), boys and their school rival: a prima donna named Mandy. In the Movie that is set to come out in 2009 new characters will be introduced; Kimberly who is in Love with the spies best friend, Jonah, Clover then goes out with Jonah and Kimberly is so upset that she threatens to reveal their secret. Clover then reliezes what she had done then gets her friend with Jonah and later they share a kiss.

Thematically, it is reminiscent of the 1970s TV show Charlie's Angels, with Jerry serving as a kind of amalgamation of "Bosley" and "Charlie." Unlike Charlie, however, Jerry is not afraid to reveal himself to his agents. The spies are usually transported to his office via a secret tunnel, hole etc., which is a phenomenon known amongst the spies as "WOOHPing". In Jerry's office, the spies are briefed on their missions and occasionally are informed on relatively minor personal issues. The show displays a sexual aesthetic look that pays homage to 60s design fashion, such as "flower power", and as well as the 1980s anime series Dirty Pair. For example, the suits and jetpacks used by the Dirty Pair in episode 8 of the original television series resemble the spies' catsuits and jetpacks. Sam, Alex and Clover also change their clothes, unlike most cartoon characters who have one basic outfit.

[edit] Animation style

Totally Spies is often wrongly described as "American" (despite being produced in Europe) due to its use of well-known visual gags and cues, as well as its Southern California setting. It also has a strong shōjo influence. The series also features a vaguely Japanese animation style. The characters are drawn with big, dramatic eyes and the same basic body template. Anime gags are used--sometimes excessively--such as the sweat drop, crossed vein, and extreme facial expressions. Due to the shōjo motif and the use of anime gags, some viewers have considered the series as an American anime, even though it was made in France.[2]

[edit] Characters

Totally Spies features the adventures and missions of three spies (Sam, Clover, and Alex) led by the head and founder of WOOHP, Jerry Lewis. The surnames for the Spies are either not revealed or unknown. For example, Sam introduces herself as "Samantha Simpson" in one episode, and in another she is called "Sammy Kings". However, no one is certain if that is her real surname.

Sam (short for Samantha) usually referred to as Sam, has long, wavy red hair, and a green catsuit. She is the most intelligent of the group. Sam is the most responsible and most grown-up of the girls.

Clover has medium length blonde hair and a red catsuit. She is the show's most stereotypical character: a shopping addicted, boy crazy, teenage "fashionista".

Alex (short for Alexandra) has short black hair and tan skin. Despite being the clumsy one, she excels in athletics, particularly in soccer. She wears a yellow catsuit. She is also somewhat of a tomboy compared to Clover and Sam, but is as eager as the other two when it comes to fashion and boys.

Jerry is the founder and administrator of WOOHP, the World Organization Of Human Protection. He is a middle-aged, very serious British gentleman. He briefs the girls on their missions, distributes their gadgets, and provides mission support with information or direct involvement. He is often the butt of jokes when it comes to his absence of a full head of hair. According to GLADIS, Jerry is not really the head of WOOHP.

[edit] Gadgets

Every mission assigned to the spies by WOOHP involves several gadgets given to them by Jerry (or, in seasons 3 and 4, G.L.A.D.I.S.). Missions not assigned by WOOHP usually use old gadgets kept by the girls in case of emergencies. WOOHP gadgets often have acronyms that spell out ironic or comical words (often accompanied by reactions from the spies) such as RASH and KURTT. Almost all missions involve the red, green and yellow catsuits, but these are sometimes overridden by other apparel (for example the UPWATI). Most gadgets are pink, but in season 3 the colour purple mostly replaced pink as the primary colour for gadgets.

Jerry also uses gadgets, but, being middle-aged instead of adolescent, he uses more "adult-friendly" gadgets. These are often disguised as regular objects, and are usually coloured red, green or yellow.

[edit] Villains

For the first three seasons, the villains featured in the series were generally one-shot characters used for a single episode. Most of them intend to oppose the world because they have suffered some major disappointment (such as being constantly rejected by men or women) or trauma. Only a few villains ever made a second appearance, which always focused around them attempting to get revenge on the girls for foiling their original scheme.

In the Season three finale, the show gave the Spies an actual arch-nemesis in the form of Terry Lewis, Jerry's evil twin brother. Terence was supposed to be the show's final villain, being the main antagonist of the three-part episode "Evil Promotion Much?", originally intended as the series finale. When the show was renewed for a 4th season, Terence was brought back and given a major role as the main enemy of the girls. He forms a Legion of Doom-style organization called LAMOS, comprised of the show's recurring villains, in order to battle the spies.

[edit] Headquarters

The World Organization Of Human Protection (or WOOHP) is a fictional worldwide crime-fighting organization in the animated series Totally Spies. Founded and headed by Jerry James Lewis, WOOHP uses cutting-edge technology and highly skilled agents to fight crime and diffuse humanitarian crises all over the world. Its headquarters is located in Downtown Los Angeles. The building itself has been shown to be in the shape of a W.

Clover, Sam, and Alex are their top three superspies, frequently called in to solve the most difficult cases worldwide. When he needs them, Jerry can "WOOHP" them to his office at the press of a button from wherever they might be. This is usually done via vacuum tunnels that lead to the office, but they have also been blasted to their destination via rocket ship, teleported, picked right off the freeway via helicopter, and scooped up by a passing train. On missions, Jerry provides the spies with information, analyzes clues, and occasionally steps in to give them a hand.

In season three, Jerry added G.L.A.D.I.S. to his office. G.L.A.D.I.S. (Gadget Lending And Distributing Interactive System), is a computer he designed to help him run WOOHP, but G.L.A.D.I.S. tends to have a mind of her own. G.L.A.D.I.S. has been met with a fair share of hostility from fans, which claim that because she now distributes the gadgets she tends to reduce Jerry to a subordinate role in WOOHP, even though he is the founder and administrator. After two seasons, G.L.A.D.I.S. was written off the show in Season five as having been destroyed and recycled due to its attitude.

WOOHP is shown to actually have three branches. One in America, one in Europe, and one in Australia. In addition, it was revealed to have a sister organization: WOOAP, the World Organization of Animal Protection.[3]

[edit] Spinoff Series

It has been confirmed by Guillaume Rostain, executive producer of Marathon Media, that there will be a Totally Spies spinoff.[4] The show is called "The Amazing Spiez" and will feature new characters as spies, but Sam, Clover, and Alex are said to be making appearances throughout the series. Jerry is also seen saying his famous "Hello, Spies!" phrase. It focuses on 4 young 12-year-old siblings Lee, Megan, Marc and Tony Clark with more improvement on their gadgets.[5] The show did have its world premiere on March 15, 2009 on Disney Channel Asia.

[edit] Media

Totally Spies features a total of 4 seasons with 104 episodes, with an additional 25 episode fifth season airing in Canada, France, Greece, Poland, The Netherlands, UK, Ireland, Romania, Estonia and Russia and Asia (through Disney Channel Asia).

[edit] Video games

The Totally Spies series was initially followed up with two video games titled Totally Spies! and Totally Spies! 2: Undercover. Both were developed by Mistic Software and published by Atari for the Nintendo GBA and/or DS.. [6] [7] IGN rates Totally Spies! 2: Undercover with a score of 4.0/10 citing poor overall game presentation. Totally Spies! 3: Secret Agents has been recently released in Europe and Australia for the Nintendo DS. [8] Totally Spies! Totally Party was released in North America, Europe and Australia for the PlayStation 2, Wii and PC. [9] [10]

[edit] Reception

Most receptions are positive. The show is elected as 'Best performing cartoon' (Channel 4, UK), has the best ratings (Fox kids UK), and is number 1 in its timeslot in France (TF1 and Jetix), Italy (Italia Uno), the Netherlands (Fox Kids, now Jetix), Brazil (TV Globo) and the US (Cartoon Network), The Den in Ireland was the first TV station in Europe to show new series and episodes. The show has sold to more than 100 countries.[11] In 2004, it was Cartoon Network's second highest rated show.[12] The show is popular among girls and boys, with, according to David Michel (Co-creator and co-producer of Totally Spies) "a 50% boys 50% girls audience ratio, whereas everybody was predicting the show would score very low on boys".[13] It is also so popular, that, in some parts of the world, a whole range of merchandising was put on the market, with Totally Spies stationary, dolls, DVDs, computergames, quilt covers, and even costumes.[14] McDonalds also had their own Totally Spies merchandising, having Totally Spies gadgets put with ones McDonalds happy meal,[15] and a performance of 'the spies' in the nearest restaurant if one would finish a colouring picture.[16]

Most of the negative reactions and criticism are because the show is said to mimic anime.[17]

[edit] Series

The show is about Alex Russo (Selena Gomez), her older brother Justin (David Henrie), and their younger brother Max (Jake T. Austin), and Alex's best friend Harper (Jennifer Stone). The three are wizards and live with their Italian-American father, Jerry, and their Mexican-American mother, Theresa. The children aren't allowed to use magic without supervision, and according to the premise, only one of the three will keep their magic abilities once they are adults, and this will be determined by a magic competition. Jerry (their father) once did this competition and won, but gave his powers up to marry their mortal mother (Theresa) as a wizard is not allowed to marry a mortal. Alex often gets into trouble by using magic unsupervised, and learns lessons and morals relating to friends, family, and school. But she still ends up getting into trouble again and again for the lessons that she supposedly already learned about the hard way. The show's theme song is called "Everything is Not What It Seems", which was written by John Adair and Steve Hampton, who also wrote the theme songs to fellow Disney Channel original series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Phil of the Future. The theme song, performed by Selena Gomez, is a techno-pop style theme.

[edit] Main settings

The show is primarily set on Waverly Place, a street in Manhattan.

  • Waverly Sub Station is the Russo Family's sandwich shop. All three kids work and hang out there. It resembles a typical New York City Subway station.
  • The Magic Lair is where the Russo kids have magic class with their father. Often, the freezer is used as a portal between the Waverly Sub Station, and the Russo home.
  • The Loft is where the Russo family lives. It is also connected to the magic lair and the Waverly Sub Station.
  • Waverly Place is outside of the Waverly Sub Station. Mainly, the pedestrian-only alleyway is shot and Waverly Place is only shot on certain occasions like in the episode First Kiss, prior to the crystal ball scene.
  • Tribeca Prep is the school that Justin, Alex, Max, and their friends attend.
  • WizTech is the magic school where Alex and Justin attend in "Wizard School" and that Max also attends in "Saving WizTech".

[edit] Characters

  • Alexandra Margarita Russo or Alex (Selena Gomez), a young wizard in training. She is the middle child and the only girl, often overshadowed in school and in wizard training by her brother, Justin. She's spunky, sarcastic, a fashion lover, street smart, and quite mischievous. She is pretty popular at school. In some episodes, Alex is shown as 'Daddy's Little Princess'. Often in trouble, she has been grounded many times for using magic without permission. Her best friend, Harper, is also into fashion but is dorky. Alex and Harper are constantly fighting the popular bully Gigi (Gertrude) and her crew. She is often seen picking on Justin for being smart. Alex usually keeps her wand in her shoe/sock. She was born in Cab 804, a Taxi.
  • Justin Vincenzo Pepe Russo or Justin (David Henrie), the oldest child in the Russo family. He is intelligent, mature, and responsible, but is always picked on by his younger sister Alex. He enjoys watching sports, as he is a fan of the Mets and the Jets, but doesn't enjoy playing them. He is not good at baseball although once he used magic to do well in a baseball game because he wanted to impress a girl. Though he isn't really popular, Alex's best friend Harper has an obsessive crush on him. He knows more about magic than his younger siblings, taking it very seriously, but he often gets mixed up with Alex's crazy schemes and mishaps. In the two-part episode "Wizard School", when Dr. Evilini sees his skill she says that Justin may become a very powerful wizard.
  • Max Russo (Jake T. Austin), the youngest in the family. He seems to also have a short attention span, often doing unpredictable things and occasionally getting in trouble. However, he can be relied on to think of unorthodox solutions to the unusual problems that can confront a young wizard. He has a crush on Gigi, Alex's enemy, but after the episode Graphic Novel, it is never mentioned again.
  • Jerry Russo (David DeLuise), Justin, Alex, and Max's father. He runs the family's sandwich shop and trains the Russo kids in magic. When he was young, he was also a wizard. Jerry won the right to keep his powers by defeating his brother in the wizards' duel, but when he discovered that wizards can't marry mortals, he relinquished his powers to his brother to marry Theresa. He is very strict and overprotective as a magic teacher towards Alex, Justin, and Max, and he doesn't allow them to use magic in public and/or without supervision.
  • Theresa Russo (Maria Canals Barrera), Jerry's wife and Justin, Alex, and Max's mother. Although she isn't a wizard, Theresa knows all about the magical world. She helps run the sandwich shop and is very motherly, often treating her children like six-year-olds, much to their disapproval. She also is known to get very emotional when she feels that her kids are growing up too fast, as shown in the episode "Movies". She also does not like magic, and has expressed that many times.
  • Harper Finkle (Jennifer Stone), Alex's best friend. She designs her own clothes (usually themed with food). She is hyper and optimistic. She has a big crush on Justin. Alex and Harper do a lot together. Originally, Harper didn't know of the wizard secret but in "Harper Knows", Alex tells her.

Plot

The story follows Mitchie Torres, an aspiring young musician who is hoping to become a professional singer. Mitchie wants to go to a music camp named "Camp Rock". Since the family can't afford the tuition, Mitchie's mother arranges to cater food for the camp, thus allowing Mitchie to attend. Mitchie tries to conceal this from her friends at camp.

Spoiled brat/pop star Shane Gray has been assigned to be in charge of dance classes for one month at Camp Rock by his bandmates Jason and Nate. Shane hears Mitchie singing and falls in love with the voice, but does not know the identity of the singer. Shane spends much of the movie searching for the girl with the voice. Shane and Mitchie have various interactions, and, when Shane learns her identity, a romance between the two blossoms.

Characters and cast

  • Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato) is a girl who hopes to be a singer some day. Her dream is to go to Camp Rock, but her family cannot afford the pricey camp. The only way she could go was if her mother would be the cook, and she tries to hide that fact in fear of rejection.
  • Shane Gray (Joe Jonas) is the famous lead singer of the band "Connect 3". He is sent to Camp Rock, in hopes that it would help him, and get rid of his cocky and arrogant attitude. At the camp, he hears a terrific voice, and spends most of his time trying to find the girl who sang (who is really Mitchie.) Later, he meets Mitchie and they become friends.
  • Tess Tyler (Meaghan Jette Martin) is the daughter of the famous T.J. Tyler, and one day wishes to be a singer, like her mother. She is a diva and often gets her way, even if she has to hurt people. She craves attention, mostly because her mom was often too busy with her own career to care for her.
  • Caitlyn Gellar (Alyson Stoner) is Mitchie's best friend at camp, and is one of the few people who stick by her side when Tess reveals Mitchie's secret. She wants to be a music producer, and is often seen composing music on her laptop.
  • Ella Pador (Anna Maria Perez de Taglé) is Tess' so-called friend and is a little air-headed. Ella abandons Tess when she pushes her too far and instead sings with Barron and Sander at Final Jam, revealing herself to be a good singer.
  • Peggy Warburton (Margaret Dupree) (Jasmine Richards) is Tess' other "friend", and often follows Tess, even when her own opinion is different. In the end, she finally rebels, and sings on her own at Final Jam, winning the contest, and surprising everyone with her voice.
  • Connie Torres (Maria Canals Barrera) is Mitchie's mom, and also runs a family catering service called "Connie's Catering." Mitchie was, at first, embarrassed that her mother was the Camp Cook.
  • Barron (Jordan Francis) and Sander (Roshon Fegan) are break-dancera, and are best friends. They also rap, and sang at Final Jam with Ella. They are of the few that stayed on Mitchie.'s side
  • Lola Scott (Aaryn Doyle) is a singer, and sometimes raps. She is great friends with Caitlyn, and she is a talented singer, although she was not seen performing at Final Jam. She stuck with Mitchie when her secret was revealed.
  • Brown Cessario (Daniel Fathers) is Shane's uncle and also runs Camp Rock. He also said he was the guitarist of a band called the "Wet Crows."
  • Nate (Nick Jonas) and Jason (Kevin Jonas) are members of "Connect 3".
